Wen Yee’s CNY bash: The last few days of Chinese New Year had been a whirlwind of open houses with tremendous joy and pride. Yesterday’s open house was much-anticipated, as it was predicted to be out of the blues. It was an enjoyable one. When I first stepped into the house, the whole house was filled with joy and I was welcomed with open hands.

However, the attendance of the rest of the gang were daunting, one four turned up at around 7.30 that night. Wen Yee was trying to assure me that the rest will arrive in a tick of the clock. We were jubilant when some members of the gathering turned appeared at under the silhouette of the staircase.

The next few hours saw us going through plates and plates of food stuffed into the mouth, as the food served were more than awesome. Of course, I ran up and down being the official photographer of the night, attending to all the attendee’s photography needs.

More open houses: More open houses seemed to bombard the mail box as yesterday was believed to be the best day of Chinese New Year to hold open houses and gathering, either with friends or families. A total of 30 people attended the open house gathering yesterday at a gathering at Kampong Pandan, including all ages and walks of life.

An alternative in celebrating CNY: Some asked for leaves, others decided to stick to the schedule. Well, the choice is in your own hands. However, these guys had made the right choice. They were part of the “Usher @ Gong Xi Fa Cai event”. Each get their hands on Mandarin oranges, sweet and cute.

The Class did not miss their teacher, counting him in for the event. The mini-event lasted for about 10 minutes before they continued the lessons according to the lesson scheme.

Belait School undergoes massive changes: If you walk down a little more, you can smell the obvious aroma of flowers diffusing in the soft breeze that may blow your fringe from left to right. If you walk to the left, you can see beautiful sceneries with birds dancing in joy. If you walk to the right, contented students will be joyfully playing their friendly matches.

The school of more than 10 years or older remains one of the most prestigious school for Belait District as it is the only government school which takes in Science students with brilliant results during their PCE (Primary Certificate of Education) or now PSR (Penilian Sekolah Rendah). Currently, classroom renovations are on-going to enhance the learning environment for the students of the school.

Chinese New Year in Education: Year of the Ox sees new couples giving red packets or better known as “Ang Pows” as they step into the adulthood world. Long ago, they were young adults but soon as they get married, it is a choice for them to give the red packets. Red packets are not compulsarily given, unless the individual has a potential of giving them; i.e. highly-paid etc. Some people disregard giving ang pow as a must, which in fact only applies to those with potential.

Balai’s Lion Fiesta: You might be hearing this for one week or so: drums rolling and cymbals chunking. At least there are here for only 15 days, after Chinese New Year some elderlies believed that chunking the cymbals after Chinese New Year would bring bad luck (not sure how true this is).

Anyway, happy faces could be seen again as the day was once again enlightened by our friendly local lion dancers from Chung Hua Middle School Kuala Belait. Chung Ching has not been in the wild for some time but we at VanceTan.com are always hoping to see all local lion dance troupes to perform for the public.

Lion Dances Everywhere: With drum rolling everywhere, and lion dancing in almost every house, this year’s Chinese New Year, Year of Golden Ox will definitely bring wealth and good luck to all families residing in the country.

A few notable lion dance troops were seen performing their acts as early as yesterday morning when hotels, firms of business and huge companies invited the dancing troops as many believe inviting the awakened lion on the first day often brings good fortune for the rest of the year. Mandarin oranges were peeled and green pamelos were skewed to celebrate this brand new year; the mandarin would be palatable after being processed by the lion.

Labi School Lion Dance Group This year’s lion dance group includes Liew, a student at Sekolah Menengah Pengiran Jaya Negara Pengiran Haji Abu Bakar, Kuala Belait. Seaview Hotel was fortunate to grab the Labi School troop as early as 9-10 yesterday morning to perform at their hotel area.

Lion Dance Group from Chung Hua Middle School Kuala Belait: Needless to say, lion dancers had to practice almost every weekday for about one to two hours at the back on the non-air-conditioned area of the school; though breeze blow occasionally swaying from side to side. Lion dance group from Chung Hua Middle School yesterday was not only prestigious, but was also presented with style by our local expert lion dancer Shim Jan Jin.
