Increasing literacy rate
Apr 26th
Libraries crumped with exiciting extraordinary design and fascinating book contents will deifnitely put a cheerful smile on most students’ faces as they serve as the modern banks of well-polished general information, facts and figures as well as fiction stories.
Speaking to the Vance Tan Online Saturday was Mr. Alan Fletcher, an English educator at PJN Secondary School, researcher of the Centre For Brunei Teachers (CFBT). He told us that his effort done to attempt to improve the literacy rate amongst the inquisitive young minded students is by taking them frequently to the school’s library with a teacher guiding them most of the time especially during which the students have difficulties in their reading and pronunciation.
On top of that, Mr Fletcher also added that the library should be well-maintained and kept so that is remains to be a tidy, eye-pleasing floor for the students to mingle around with interesting reading materials such as newspapers, magazines and books. Confidently, he also strongly recommends students to read the Brunei Times as the range of vocabulary and punctuation range is wide and complex.

Edu@VT: How many of you realised that your feet has been with you for so long years without leaving you alone. When you’re in a football match, it is your feet which helps you to play. When you want to travel, your feet is there for you. When you are dancing, your feet supports you.
Imagine, if one day, you have lost your feet, what would happen? Imagine and visualise, who is the person in your house whom is similar to your feet. If one day, that person is not there for you, what wil happen?
When we care for our face, do we care for our feet? When we care about how good-looking we are, have we cared for how good-looking our feet are? Do we care how ugly or nice our feet are? Do we care how dirty or clean our feet are?
When we hurt our feet, it did not say anything but kept on supporting our body. Who is the person in your life who resembles this feet of yours, supporting you all the way without saying anything or complaining to you even if that person is in pain?
Think about it for a few minutes. There is a person beside you just like your feet. A person who supports you all the way, the person who gives you advice but never expects a compliment and the person who accepts pain that you gave.
Do appreciate that person just like you appreciate your face, your look and your facial expression because if that person is not around anymore, you may regret for not appreciating that person.

Edu@VT: Some components of the body may not be as ueful as you thought, but for certain individuals, it plays an extremely great role. Read upon this reader’s contributed article:
The old man placed order for one hamburger, French fries and a drink.
He unwrapped the plain hamburger and carefully cut it in half, placing one half in front of his wife.
He then carefully counted out the French fries, dividing them into two piles and neatly placed one pile in front of his wife.
He took a sip of the drink, his wife took a sip and then set the cup down between them . As he began to eat his few bites of hamburger, the people around them were looking over and whispering.
Obviously they were thinking, ‘That poor old couple – all they can afford is one meal for the two of them.’
As the man began to eat his fries a young man came to the table and politely offered to buy another meal for the old couple. The old man said, they were just fine – they were used to sharing everything.
People closer to the table noticed the little old lady hadn’t eaten a bite. She sat there watching her husband eat and occasionally taking turns sipping the drink.
Again, the young man came over and begged them to let him buy another meal for them. This time the old woman said ‘No, thank you, we are used to sharing everything.’
Finally, as the old man finished and was wiping his face neatly with the napkin, the young man again came over to the little old lady who had yet to eat a single bite of food and asked ‘What is it you are waiting for?’
