The 19th Teachers’ Day celebration took place yesterday at the International Convention Centre, in Berakas. School teachers were given a public holiday except those who were involved in the Brunei General Certificate of Education Ordinary Level (BGCE ‘O’ Level) Physics 3 and invigilators of the Geography 2 papers.

His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzadin Waddaulah and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam yesterday called for a teaching standard that can be used as a benchmark for quality, similar to that of other developed countries. The call comes in light of developed and developing nations today constantly striving to improve their education systems.

Also present at the ceremony were His Royal Highness Prince Hj Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office, HRH Prince Hj Sufri Bolkiah, HRH Prince Hj Jefri Bolkiah, HRH Prince ‘Abdul `Azim, HRH Prince ‘Abdul Malik and HRH Prince ‘Abdul Mateen.

Speaking on the theme for this year that reads “Quality Teachers, the Basis for Excellence in Education”, His Majesty said quality teachers are needed to educate and enrich students with knowledge and expertise through attractive and effective methodology. More >

Death Of Cheteria

His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, accompanied by HRH Prince Hj Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince, yesterday paid his last respects to former police commissioner YAM Pengiran Setia Raja Pengiran Haji Jaya bin Pengiran Haji Rajin at Kg Sungai Tilong, Jalan Muara, who passed away yesterday morning at RIPAS Hospital around 5.45am.

He was 83 years old, RTB reported.

He was awarded the title Cheteria -Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Setia Raja – on March 18, 1969. He was also awarded several honorary medals.

They include Dato Lela Utama, DK, Dato Seri Utama, DK, DHPNB, PHBS, QPM, CPM, PJK, Pingat Perjuangan, PKLP, Pingat Puspa and Pingat Polis Diraja.

He was the police commissioner from 1975 to 1983 before becoming ambassador- at-large for the country. He was later appointed as council member of Mesyuarat Diraja and Mesyuarat Mengangkat Raja.

He leaves behind his wife, eight children, more than 30 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

BSP celebrates its 80th anniversary

BT/Syed Rory Malai Hasan - His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam attended 30th September a joyous celebration to mark the 80th Anniversary of Brunei Shell Petroleum (BSP) Co Sdn Bhd.

Held at the BSP Headquarters in Seria, Belait District, the celebration was attended by the Minister of Energy at the Prime Minister’s Office, Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Dewa Major General (Rtd) Dato Seri Pahlawan Hj Mohammad Hj Daud, Chairman of BSP/BLNG/BST/BSM and Second Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Dewa Dato Seri Setia Lim Jock Seng, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Royal Dutch Shell Peter Voser and Managing Director (MD) of BSP Dr Grahaeme Henderson.

Also in attendance was the Minister of Communications Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia Hj Abu Bakar Hj Apong and senior members of BSP’s board of directors, senior officials from the government sector and senior management officials from BSP, BLNG, BST and BSM.

The celebration, which was also part of a working visit of His Majesty, began with a marking of the momentous occasion with a recital of the surah Al-Fatihah and thanksgiving Doa (prayer) followed by greetings and messages of appreciation by BSP’s executive management officials.

The programme continued with opening remarks by Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Dewa Dato Seri Setia Lim Jock Seng followed with words of appreciation and admiration from the CEO of Royal Dutch Shell and BSP’s Managing Director on the successful partnership shared by BSP and His Majesty’s Government.

The joyous occasion was also marked by the launching of BSP’s 80 Year Anniversary Exhibition as well as the company’s Road Safety Campaign entitled “Tell a Friend” at the Atrium of BSP’s Head Office by His Majesty.
